A Guaranteed Way to Feel Wealthier Today

We are warned against being guided by our emotions, and rightly so if we are discussing anger, lust, anxiety, or fear. Yet, there is one emotion that should guide us each day of our lives—contentment.

Contentment is a positive emotion that brings us joy, gratitude, satisfaction, peace, and fulfillment. Contentment allows us to enjoy the present and live life in the moment. The Psalmist exemplified contentment when he wrote, “This is the day that the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Ps. 118:24).” Further, contentment helps us enjoy the financial resources with which we have been blessed rather than focusing on what we don’t have or wish we had.

Richard Swenson shares in his book, Margin, that contentment is a key to gaining the financial margin we long for. Content people are not concerned how they might buy this or that, because they have no desire for this or that. They are not consumed by ridding themselves of debt because they do not have any debt.

Moreover, they are thankful for even the small things. They have time for relationships because possessions and the banks do not own them.

Most of us, if not all of us, living in the United States are wealthy. We just do not feel wealthy. Want a guaranteed way to feel wealthier today? Learn to be content! (Phil. 4:11).
